Hiking through this gem of a wilderness area is like hiking through the BC of 200 years ago. Tucked up against the western edge of the Chilcotin Plateau, this is one of the more spectacular backpacking routes in British Columbia. Starting at the north end of Tatlyako Lake you will gradually hike up to a rich sub-alpine region of lakes, meadows and ridges as you begin the circumnavigation of the 2,800 meter Niut Mountain. The remainder of this backpack tour through untracked wilderness takes you across three high mountain passes (non-technical hiking), past innumerable glacier-fed alpine lakes, and over the summit of Red Mountain, all without a single trail or sign of human presence. This backpacking trip is set up to allow side trips to explore many of the hidden valleys and ridges that give this region it's character. Though not a technical hike, this area has no existing trails and travel is in rough terrain and involves some scrambling. |
